Gray Wolf

Gray Wolf

The wolf is coming back to the Beaver State! Slowly but surely, this majestic mammal is returning to Oregon, without any prodding or cajoling from we humans. But not everyone is welcoming wolves with open arms. ONDA will work to make Oregon safe for wolves by advocating for a recovery plan that allows migrating wolves to remain in our state unharrassed.

Ten Reasons for Wolf Recovery in Oregon

On February 11, 2005, Oregon became the first western state to pro-actively accommodate the existence and responsible management of wolves within its borders when the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission adopted the Oregon Wolf Conservation and Management Plan. The plan, prepared by the Wolf Advisory Committee (WAC), a citizen advisory committee, recommended several changes to Oregon law to help give more management control to the state. Unfortunately, the 2005 legislature was unable to make the suggested changes to state law due to the lobbying efforts of the Oregon Cattlemen's Association, which opposes the presence of ANY wolves in Oregon. For now, the state plan will remain in effect, but the federal Fish and Wildlife Service will retain primary management control over wolves migrating in to Oregon from Idaho.
