volunteer trip to pull fence on Sutton Mountain wilderness area, september 2008

PROJECT DETAILS: We'll meet on Friday evening to camp (location TBA), and on Saturday morning we'll hike up and pull obsolete fence to enhance wildlife habitat.  You can enjoy an optional hike on Sunday to explore the mountain and get views of Bridge Creek and the John Day River, which wrap around Sutton Mountain's base.  More information on camping, fence pull and hiking locations will be posted this summer.

WHEN: September 5 (Friday) 6pm to September 7 (Sunday) 4pm

BACKGROUND:  30,000 acre Sutton Mountain was designated as a wilderness study area by the BLM in 1996.  Its vast flat top contains a diverse community of plants and wildlife, from old growth ponderosa pine to native grasses.  Most of Sutton Mountain has not been grazed by livestock in over 10 years, so this is a great place to observe how the natural ecosystem rebounds after grazing disturbance.  Removing fence from the area will improve both habitat connectivity and the aesthetic values of the mountain.

COST: Free for ONDA members, $45 for non-members.
