Restoring road damage to native vegetation at Steelhead Falls wilderness study area.

Project Details:  BLM will be restoring areas damaged by illegal off-road use on the Steelhead Falls WSA and along the Crooked River.  They'll reconstruct the area, removing the roads, and we'll help by re-seeding the area with native vegetation and placing natural debris (wood, rocks, etc) in the old roads.   Plan on working both Saturday and Sunday, with some down time Saturday evening to enjoy a hike down to the Deschutes River.  We'll car camp nearby on Saturday night.  Because of its close proximity to Bend, folks have the option of driving home at night, but they'll miss out on socializing and getting to know this beautiful area better!

When:  Arrive by 9:00 AM Saturday at the trailhead (directions will be included in the itinerary after registration), and we should be finished working by 4:00 PM on Sunday.

Background:  ONDA's typical trips are in the vast wilderness areas in Eastern Oregon, but we also value wildlands in the high desert of central Oregon, close to home.  Wilderness areas in closer proximity to urban areas are becoming more and more important as we face the challenges of global warming and increasing fuel costs.  They will also be at greater risk of abuse with increasing numbers of people who want to enjoy this precious resource.  Steelhead Falls Wilderness Study Area encompasses a section of the Deschutes River before it flows into Lake Billy Chinook.  The outstanding canyon views and popular fishing holes draws many locals to the area.  With our help, these wildlands can stay wild for future generations.

Cost:  Free to members, $45 for non-members.

A FULL ITINERARY, INCLUDING WHAT TO BRING, WILL BE PROVIDED UPON REGISTRATION.
