Abert Rim Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Project

Case Number: Project No. P-13054-000
Filed on: 2008/03/27
Filed by: Dave Becker

Administrative action challenging hydropower company's proposal to pump water out of Lake Abert and tunnel beneath the Abert Rim Wilderness Study Area, impacting wilderness values and Western Snowy Plover habitat.

Apr. 4, '08 - See the press.

Mar. 27, '08 - ONDA opposes an application to build a hydroelectric project next to Lake Abert and the Abert Rim Wilderness Study Area. Concerns include impacts to wilderness values (including ONDA's proposed Abert Rim WSA Addition and Coglin Buttes proposed WSA), the Lake Abert Area of Critical Environmental Concern, and Western Snowy Plover habitat. An almost identical project failed to materialize in the 1990s because of public opposition and the impracticality of siting a pumped storage hydropower project in desert wilderness. Oregon Wild and WaterWatch join the protest.
